Japanese inlaid silver vase with a slender neck, the ovoid body worked in gold, silver, shakudo, shibuichi and copper with a sparrow on the ground among flowers and foliage looking at ants in its path, signed to the body in chiselled characters Yoshiyuki koku 美幸刻 (carved by Yoshiyuki) and stamped to the underside with the mark Jungin 純銀 (pure silver) and the swallow in flight trademark of the Hattori Company, Taisho Period 1912-1926.
The sparrow (suzume 雀) is symbolic of happiness and prosperity.
The artist Yoshiyuki 美幸 worked for the K. Hattori Company.
Kintaro Hattori 服部金太郎 founded the Hattori Clock and Jewellery store in 1881. The company produced and retailed luxury goods such as silverware for export and sold them in their department store in the Ginza area of Tokyo. In 1924 Hattori founded a watchmaking factory called Seiko which became the world's largest watch manufacturer.
