Japanese bronze dish of round form inlaid in relief and worked in shakudo, gold, silver and shibuichi taka-zogan and hon-zogan with two crows amid the branches of a cherry blossom tree, beneath a full moon emerging from scrolling clouds on a rich brown ground signed to one side in raised gold characters Isshosai Masaaki (Isshosai Shomei) 一松斎正明, Meiji period 1868-1912.
The crow (karasu カラス) is thought to be gifted with supernatural powers and is also a messenger of the gods and has a long history and cultural tradition in Japan.
