A wonderful geometric antique Heriz runner with great terracottas, green, yellow and pale blue dyes.  The eight pointed star design and latch hook motifs down the centre are well spaced out and the border colour is not your typical dark blue but a lighter shade making it a lighter piece for a hall. The design is quite contemporary in certain ways and could work in both traditional and contemporary settings.  There is some lovely 'abrash' which is the term for dye change in the some of the repeating medallions, where the green dyes change from lighter to darker.  This antique runner is in very good condition with a nice wool pile and no losses to the fringes, the sides are original in parts and have been tidied up in places.  A lovely antique runner ideal to brighten up the floor in a corridor or entrance hall.

Heriz and Karaja are not far from the Azerbaijan Border so they draw influences from many Caucasian rugs and runners. They are easily recognisable with repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif is often the latch-hooked design motif or an eight-pointed star.  The village weavings of Karaja such as this runner often use a simpler repeating medallion design with a great array of colour.
