A good set of four Romayne Head oak panels. Probably mid 16th century, a rare set of four Romayne Head oak panels of typical form showing two couples facing each other.
The men are bearded and the women wear elaborate head coverings. Excellent rich dark colour. Although probably French, it is possible that they are English.
See the front cover of the somewhat eccentric book by Michael Dann entitled "The English Smile" which shows the end panel of an early 16th century chest. Each panel is roughly 15inches x 11 1/2 inches.
