German salt-glazed tankard, 17/18th century, of globular form with reeded neck and strap handle, the bulbous stoneware body decorated in cobalt blue with moulded fleur-de-lis design, height: 18.5cm. (7 1/4in.)

German stoneware tankards from the sevententh century were brought to America in large numbers on Dutch fur-trading ships. Shards of these popular vessels have been uncovered at seventeenth century sites in New York and New England.
