This very fine piece stands on an oval pedestal foot which is decorated with lobing and gadrooning and the baluster shaped main body is also decorated with a second wide band of horizontal lobing.  The sides rise to an everted rim decorated with gadrooning interspersed with Rococo shells flanked by acanthus foliage.

The rim also displays anthemion motifs. The Tureen has two leaf capped, harp shaped, side handles which are attached to the main body with acanthus leaf mouldings.  The high domed oval cover is also decorated with lobing and terminates in a cast crossed branch and shell finial attached to a foliate platform.

Most unusually, this piece has a removable silver liner, which is also a sign of quality of design and production. The Tureen is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the main body, and liner, and with the maker's mark, date letter and sterling mark on the cover.  The main body, cover and liner are all, also, engraved with a contemporary Crest.

Considering its size and weight, the Tureen has a length of 17.5 inches, a width of 10.5 inches and a height of 12 inches.  With reference to its weight, it weighs a quite outstanding 154oz.

This is one of the finest pieces we have ever seen by John Edward Terrey (comparable to Storr) and is a rare item to come from his workshops.  His work does not survive in great quantity, however it is nearly always of exceptional quality in terms of design and production.
