The Caster stands on a square pedestal foot, which rises to a Classical vase shaped body. The shaped, domed, pull-off cover is pierced with plain roundels and decorated with reeded bands.

The caster has fine interior gilding and is fully marked on the side of the foot and with the maker's mark in the foot. The unusual small size of this piece dictates that it was most probably for cayenne pepper.

The Crest is that as used by the Beckford family, the most famous member being William Beckford , (1760-1844), the writer and important consummate art collector.

At one stage in his life he was reputed to be the richest man in England. A portrait of William Beckford, by Sir Joshua Reynolds, is attached. This piece is in excellent condition.
