A Rare and Unusual George III Burr-Maple, Fustic, Ebony and Holly Harlequin Pembroke Table By Mayhew And Ince, Circa 1772.

The top with panels of burr-maple cross-banded with fustic, the frieze with a candle-slide and a drawer to either side, on square tapering legs inlaid with ebony and holly simulating fluting. The top lifting (by means of a loper) to reveal drawers and pigeonholes. Retaining it’s original lacquered brass laurel wreath handles. The original locks stamped on the inside E GASCOIGNE.

Provenance

Almost certainly Archibald Douglas (later 1st Lord Douglas), 104 Pall Mall, St James’s

Thence by descent to his granddaughter and heiress Lucy Montagu-Scott who married 11th Earl Home

Thence by descent at The Hirsel, Berwickshire to the 16th Earl Home, by whom sold 2023.

Literature

Payments to Ince and Mayhew in 1771 and 1773 from Archibald Douglas are recorded (H. Roberts and C. Cator, The Partnership of William Ince and John Mayhew, 2022, pp 140-141).

Locks stamped E Gascoigne are found on a number of Ince and Mayhew commissions (ibid 148, 154 nn52-53).
