Almost all of Wilfrid’s Versailles subjects were painted around 1918, when he worked at the Château, first as a censor, and later as a translator during the Paris Peace Conference. His sketches of the grounds and gardens at Versailles, together with studies made earlier at the Italian front in 1917, formed the basis of his one-man exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in 1919.
