Folk Art Carved Walking Stick.
Profusely and meticulously carved, this fruitwood cane may just have belonged to a publican. Beneath the pyrographic handle, made to resemble tortoiseshell, is the carved shaft. Handle and shaft are united by a band of nickel beneath which is carved a buckled belt and a Crown and Anchor. However, in this same section there is carved a Plume of Feathers (for the Prince of Wales) a square and compass symbol (Masonic) and Britannia’s shield.
Each thematic section is separated by a carved buckled belt. The second section down is carved with symbols of Great Britain; Shamrock, Roses and Thistles. The third section is carved only with oak leaves and acorns, the last with a sprig of hops.
Made sometime during the first half of the 19th century.
