A Fine White Marble Figure of a Kneeling Cherub, By Pio Fedi.

Signed to the base 'Pio Fedi Faceva'.

Italian, Circa 1860.

Pio Fedi

Pio Fedi (1815-1892) was an Italian sculptor working in the nineteenth century with a studio in Florence at 89 Via de Serragli.

Working chiefly in the Romantic style, his work combined themes  derived from history and mythology, often mixing elements of Neoclassical, Baroque and Mannerist styles within a romantic 19th century context.

He is best known for his sculpture of the Rape of Polyxena or Pyrrhus and Polyxena (unveiled 1866) in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. Considered the masterpiece of the artist and one of the most significant works of Italian nineteenth-century sculpture, it was placed in the prestigious location of the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, the only modern work between ancient and Renaissance masterpieces.

He also completed statues of Niccola Pisano and the scientist Cisalpine, for the Portico degli Uffizi and designed the statue of General Manfredo Fanti, cast in bronze by Papi, standing in Piazza San Marco.

Other works included the Fury of Atamante, King of Thebes, The Genius of Fishing, Hope Nourishing Love, Hyppolite and Dianora del Bardi and Castalla persecuted by Apollon.
