Fine Japanese Satsuma Bowl – Matsumoto Shozan.

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this extremely fine quality Meiji Period (1868-1912) Satsuma bowl, the underside artist signed by Matsumoto Shozan, a highly regarded and well recorded artist working towards the latter part of the 19th century. The bowl is extensive decorated to the exterior with a plethora of birds in flight amidst native cherry blossom and bamboo, the blossom vibrantly coloured in enamels, the entire decoration set against a ground of fine speckled gilt. The enchanting interior of the bowl decorated with a band of children in various pursuits beneath hanging wisteria, the main central panel decorated as a temple landscape within a fan shaped cartouche aside a scroll banner of a Samurai warrior working in calligraphy, once again all set upon a fine stippled gilt dust ground. This lovely bowl is fully decorated in fastidious detail with virtually no area left blank, artist signed Masumoto Shozan to the underside and bears an old collection label.
