Pierced Mustard Pots were not seen much in England much before the mid 1760's therefore this example is a rare survivor from this early period. This fine piece is "Drum" shaped in form, with stepped reeded base and everted rim.
The sides of the main body display an early pierced design simulating raying stylised flower heads. The slightly domed hinged cover is engraved with circular reeded bands and this example has a plain scroll handle and "Onslow" pattern thumbpiece.
The Mustard Pot is fully marked on the base and with the sterling mark on the cover. This piece is in excellent condition and is a rare survivor from this period.
An example, with near identical piercing, was contained within the famous Colman Collection of Mustard Pots and is illustrated on page 22 of the catalogue. Andrew Fogelberg was the Master of the great Paul Storr and taught him his trade.
He had workshops in Soho when this piece was made and was a silversmith of great quality in terms of design and production. The Mustard Pot also has a spoon aperture and its original blue glass liner.
