Fascinating Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Box Attr - Kumeno Teitaro.

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this most unusual Meiji Period (1868-1912) cloisonne enamel lidded box, the cushion shaped box is fitted with shakudo rims and silk linings, the entire exterior is decorated in a bamboo pattern upon a pale blue enamel ground, the unknown artist has further decorated this box with a series of striking multi colour roundels so fresh in appearance they could confuse the fact that this box was manufactured over 130 years ago. Although unsigned boxes with shakudo rims and silk linings are not commonplace, it does not appear to be the work of the prolific Ando company who used silver as the rims, and does not seem to fit in with the style of either of the Namikawa artists work of the period, this would leave us to possibly look at works by Kumeno Teitaro, a highly skilled artist producing unusual enamel items and particularly boxes such as this, towards the end of the 19th century. Regardless of attribution this will make a fantastic and most unusual addition to a Japanese enamel or works of art collection.
