An extremely fine pair of early George III Cast Candlesticks made in London in 1767 by William Cafe.
The Candlesticks are cast and stand on square stepped bases, below a swirl fluted section, which is also decorated with a bold gadrooned band. The beautifully shaped stems are facetted in the central section and are also decorated with horizontal gadrooned bands and raised reeding. The detachable nozzles, are of square design with an outer gadrooned band and the central sections are both engraved with a contemporary Crest. The underside of each base is very well marked, as are the nozzles with the maker's mark and sterling mark. This design was popular during the 1760's and 1770's and both candlesticks are in excellent condition, with a good colour. William Cafe was a very fine specialist candlestick maker, who held a monopoly at this date in London, for their production.
