Early Ottoman Brass Candlestick.
Ottoman Empire, Circa 1500, Height: 22 cm.
With truncated conical body flanged at the base. The baluster shaft with globular openwork section in the middle. All engraved with palmettes, arabesques and cable bands on a ring punched ground. This candlestick belongs to a small group of early Ottoman metalwork. It’s decoration displays the so-called “Baba Nakkash” aesthetic which can also be observed in Iznik.
The decorative repertoire used on the candlestick display the richness and mastery of the craftsmanship during the reign of Sultan Bayazid II (r. 1481-1512). Similar decoration can be found on bindings, ceramics and woodwork from this period.
