Probably Northern France circa 1500, this stunning carved oak figure depicts St Stephen dressed in a dalmatic as a deacon and shown, as usual for him, beardless with gentle features.
One of seven deacons appointed by the apostles, he was the first martyr and was stoned to death. The figure retains some of its original paint and gilding.
It stands just under life size and is 67 inches high including the later oak base.
