Dutch Tobacco Box Estate of Reysenburgh.

A naively carved boxwood tobacco box, Dutch, dated 1809. All about Sperendal.

The house, as it still stands, is carved to the base, flanked by two further houses, all built in a wooded landscape in 1754.
The church of St. Petrus is carved to the lid and titled as being within the estate of Reysenburgh (Rijsenburg), 1809. It is a matter of record that in 1806 a Van Oosthuyse bought the Rijsenburg Estate.
The back is carved with the legend ‘P.J. Oosthuyse Lord of Lords Van Reysenburgh in Sperendal’; the cut lettering flanked by two standing figures; a man in coat tails with a huge pipe, probably P.J. Oosthuyse himself, and a lady, either holding a fan or a leaf.
The front panel is carved with a marvellous scene of a shepherd, his shotgun slung over his shoulder, leading his flock, which is in turn being lead by the ram all followed up by his dog.
Either end is carved with figures and writing, probably titled scenes from biblical stories.

The box is hinged with brass and opens onto a mirrored interior, (cracked).

5 3/4 in x 1 5/8 in x 1 3/4 in.
