The 'peacock pattern' was a popular design in the Netherlands throughout the eighteenth century. Though its development is certainly linked to the popularity of designs associated with the luxury and exoticism of 'the Orient', the combination of peacocks, urns and scrolling vines may have originated in early Byzantine funerary iconography. Such designs can be found on sarcophagi and floor mosaics in Ravenna dating from the 4th century onwards.
