A 19th century copy of a parade shield of Henry II of France, after designs by Etienne Delaune, Jean Cousins the Elder and Baptiste Pellerin; French artists active in Paris towards the end of the 16th century.
A period shield of a similar design is held at the Met and describes the central scene as depicting the victory of Hannibal and the Carthaginians over the Romans at Cannae in 216.
Given the history of the original shield, this copy, made of iron and dating from the mid 19th century, is likely to have been cast in France.
There are identifying catalogue numbers cast into the reverse.
