Chinese massive blue and white baluster jar with cover.
Kangxi (1662-1722).
Painted in a good cobalt underglaze blue, the body with alternating panels, two of which contain mountainous river landscape scenes with boatmen on the water and figures on the rocky shoreline.
One containing peony blooms issuing from rockwork with a pair of pheasants, a smaller bird and flying insects. The other with songbirds perching on the branches of a fruiting plum tree with rockwork and flying insects, all between stylised chrysanthemum head borders to the foot and shoulders.
The neck with a band of scrolling lotus heads. The lid decorated with panels containing miniature landscape scenes and flowers, surmounted by a pear-shaped finial.
