Chinese Imari ribbed armorial salt.

Yonzheng (1723-1735).

Decorated with the arms of Brydges Duke of Chandos impaling Willoughby and Middleton (Argent on a cross sable a leopard’s face or, impaling Willoughby, Or fretty azure, and Middleton, Or, on two bars gules, three water bougets argent quarterly), with the motto ‘MAINTIEN LE DROIT’.

The body decorated with gilded sprays of chrysanthemums and peonies. The ribbed rim and foot similarly decorated with scrolling sprays of flowers.

James Brydges was the eldest son of Sir James Brydges, 8th Baron Chandos; known as ‘Princely Chandos’, he was raised to the Earldom of Caenarvon in 1714, the same year as marrying his second wife, Cassandra, daughter of Francis Willoughby and sister of Thomas, 1st Lord Middleton, and finally the Dukedom of Chandos in 1729.

This service was probably ordered at first in 1715; however, the gold flowers and scrollwork on some pieces is more appropriate to 1725-1730.
