Chinese grisaille European Subject bowl.
Circa 1750, Qianlong (1736-95).
With foliate rim. Decorated in the centre with a courting lady and gallant in European dress seated beneath a tree.
With a further amorous couple in a thicket in the background. The inner rim with Dutch over-painted sprays of flowers and fruiting branches.
The design for this set is thought to be based upon an engraving by Jean-Baptiste Pater, perhaps a preparatory work for 'L'Amour et le Badinage'.
