Chinese famille-rose scalloped dish.
Qianlong (1736-1795).
Decorated in the centre with a naked European figure in gilt, seated on leaves enclosed by a flower garland. Bordered by three dancing European men in breeches and three cockerels interspersed with flowers.
For an illustrated example of a similar dish see 'Chinese Export Porcelain: Chine de Commande from the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels', (1989-90), p. 127, pl. 39. The shape of the dish is based on a European silver model.
The existence of a similarly decorated plate in the Mottahdeh collection suggests that this dish may have been part of a number of dinner services decorated with dancers and musicians.
