Circa 1775.
Decorated with the arms of Grant of Darlway in Scotland (Gules a boar's head couped between three Eastern crowns, within a bordure all or; crest, A hand couped at the wrist holding a branch of laurel fructed proper; the motto of Grant of Darlyway being 'Radicem firmant frondles' with flower sprays, the inner rim with a band of spearhead decoration.
Provenance: with Davidson Collection label to base. This service was made for Charles Grant of Darlway and Waternish, Inverness-shire, (c. 1746-1823). He was director of the East India Company (1797-1823) and Chairman in 1805, 1809 and 1815, and director of the South Sea Company.
