Chinese Canton famille-rose oval dish.

19th century.

The interior is decorated with a seated dignitary accompanied by attendants in a courtyard setting. In the centre two kneeling women seek supplication from a court attendant while two standing women carrying baskets look on. The exterior border with butterflies and floral sprays.

Butterflies (hudie) symbolise blessings or happiness and when accompanied by peonies mean 'may you have an accumulation of blessings, wealth and high social status' and among blooming flowers is an auspicious design symbolising joy, love and good fortune.
