Carved Marble Baroque Casket

Circa 1700.
The interior contains two wood and velvet lined circular compartments. The strapwork hinges are finely chased and decorated. The exquisite marble, which is of unknown origin, is a rare grey with marine fossil inclusions.
A similar marble can be seen in the Church of San Lorenzo in Rome, dedicated in 1180.
