Wilfrid Gabriel De Glehn NEAC. RP. RA. (1870–1951).

Boys Fishing, Avignon, circa 1922.

Watercolour.

41 x 51 cms 161⁄8 x 201⁄8 ins signed, W.G. de Glehn ARA, lower left.

Provenance: The Artist’s Studio Estate; Atelier number 1311.

This watercolour of fishermen near a medieval bridge was probably painted in the very early 1920s, when Wilfrid and Jane were travelling in southern France. Wilfrid was elected ARA in 1923, and by that date he may have been was in Florence, rather than Avignon, so he could have added this signature later. It is not clear which bridge Wilfrid depicted. It is not the Pont de Saint-Bénézit, which has arches in the surviving piers, but it is somewhat similar to the medieval bridge at Aurillac in the Auvergne.
