- Colourful, decorative, impressionistic work capturing the refreshing quality and colour refraction of light rain.
- The composition is beautifully balanced the houses either side of the lane, with a strong foreground and light background recreating the visual depth of the landscape.
- The purple, blue, green, pink, and earth tones of the palette create liveliness and softness within the work and the light tones of the water on the lane have the strong reflective quality of a water.

Basil Nubel was a landscape painter in oil and watercolour born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, to an English mother and German father. Nubel studied at Leeds College of Art under Alfred Daniels and Maurice de Sausmarez, then at the Royal College of Art under Carel Weight, Robert Buhler and Rodrigo Moynihan. He was one of Jack Beddington's ‘Young Artists of Promise’ and lived in London.
