Exceptional Balouch flat weave dating to around 1900. Its geographical origin is not entirely clear: it could be from the northeast Persian province of Khorasan, but it could also come from further south, the border area between Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran.

It is worked in two pieces in wool and goat hair in an extremely fine weave employing various techniques, mainly interlocking tapestry and weft-float brocading. There is also some embroidery in the kelim ends on a white ground.

Not much has been written about these flat woven textiles, and a very recent publication by J. Affentranger and W. Windau is a welcome addition to M.G. Konieczny's Textiles of Baluchistan published for the British Museum in 1979. For further discussion, see our website at  https://www.christopherleggeorientalcarpets.com/products/view/balouch-flat-weave/.

The flat weave is in very good condition, with some minor repairs, and is highly collectible.
