An antique Bakshaish carpet with a Serapi design with exquisite colours and bold geometric patterns.  More often Bakshaish carpets were woven in larger sizes and always with bold geometric designs, and vivid colours. Their designs can be quite abstract and nearly always comprised of a central motif which sprawls out in one large design to the corner spandrels or with a smaller medallion inside a larger medallion.

This piece uses a soft pale blue medallion inside a large rust medallion with the pinkish tone corner spandrels, the colour palette is quite exceptional.  Woven around 1860-1870 the natural dyes have mellowed to reveal some majestic muted colours.  The pale blues, pinks and yellows are dyes we see in Serapi carpets which are regarded as earlier carpets from the town of Heriz.  This carpet is a mixture of both Bakshaish and Serapi in style and design.

The weavers in Bakshaish, north Persia used the influences of tribal weavers from the Caucasian villages in their designs.  These rustic carpets are often a very similar in colour to that of neighbouring Heriz and Serapi carpets and rugs.  The early pieces such as this will always have more muted dyes purely down to their age, the natural yellows and variety of rust reds are only seen in carpets of this vintage.

Both ends have had about 2 cm of reweaving all the way across as it was missing some pile at both ends.  This does not detract from the value and originality of the piece in anyway, merely preserving such a rare beautiful carpet.  The overall pile of the carpet is medium high all over, with some minimal restoration to again preserve it.  This carpet has been professionally cleaned by ourselves, all washed by hand and is ready to be used.  A wonderful early carpet to decorate with or place in a variety of rooms.  Often we have placed these carpets in contemporary settings due to their bold, abstract designs as well as traditional homes.
