Antoine-Louis Barye was dubbed the 'Michelangelo of the Menagerie' by the celebrated art critic, Théophile Gautier, in L'Illustration, May 1866. As a Romantic French sculptor most famous for his work as an ‘animalier’, a sculptor of animals, Barye achieved international acclaim during his lifetime, but his celebrity has grown ever since and today he is remembered as one of the most important and identifiable sculptors of the nineteenth century.
