This 19th-century Ruijo (bridal sheet) was most likely made in the Ferghana Valley, Uzbekistan. It belongs to a particular group of Suzanis which, in its original format, had a plain cotton centre. The embroidery is worked in silk in a variety of stitches on five panels. The top end is particularly rich with its double row of large flower heads on a stem, the red colour being derived from cochineal, an insect dye.
The Suzani is in excellent condition and has been backed onto fine linen.
