Antique Mahal carpet with soft muted greens and pale blues. In good wool pile all over this is an attractive carpet ideal for many rooms.  Not having a central medallion makes this an easy piece to place in a variety of rooms.  Woven around 1900-1910 the colours have muted beautifully. Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran.

Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
