Stunning tribal Antique Luri rug with a very interesting repeating 'Boteh' design in the main field.  This remarkable antique rug shows how these nomadic weavers loved to readjust their designs at the start of the weaving process too.  Look at the bottom left side of the rug especially to see how the ivory minor border design changed, as well as the stripe border, changing the size of the borders until they were happy with the pattern.  Nomadic weavers such as these loved to play with the patterns, and even the Boteh pattern changes through-out the weaving.

These tribal Persian rugs were generally woven around the Zagros Mountains area of Western Persia by the Luri people. Generally geometric in design, with animal motifs, and boteh motifs such as this exquisite tribal rug.  They produced a lot of bags and trappings too.  Soft lush wool combined with natural dyes created incredible antique rugs, the tough quality wool made these rugs durable and supple to touch.  These Luri rugs are rare as often they are not classified correctly and attributed to different nomadic weaving areas.

Condition report

The wool is thick and lush and the dyes all natural and faded over the last 120 years to produce wonderful colours.  Condition is exceptional, as we have original kilim ends at the finish (top) plus some kilim (flatweave) at the start.  Well loved and looked after we acquired this from a private collector, it is a beautiful example of Luri weaving.
