A truly handsome antique Karabagh Kelleh carpet woven with exquisite natural dyes and a repeating 'Boteh' design in the main field.  The small corner spandrels have a splash of vivid indigo blue and the border design uses the scrolling vine and geometric floral motif.  The cochineal dye is famous in rugs from Karabagh as they loved to use this dye to create amazing purples and deep reds.

In really good condition all over with both ends professionally restored about 4cm at both ends using old wool to match.  In great usable order and we have also recently cleaned it giving the carpets colours more life.

These pieces were woven in the south-west of Azerbaijan, an area that produced these unusual long corridor carpets. Carpet weaving grew in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the commercial market demanded exciting, bold flamboyant pieces for the West.  Caucasian rugs are famous for their vivid colours and geometric designs.
