This Chinese Ningxia dragon throne back dates to the first half of the 19th century. Throne backs adorned the backs of high-ranking dignitaries' chairs, hence the name throne back. In this pleasantly shaped, almost square example, the elegantly drawn field contains a five-clawed dragon looking out at the viewer and two further dragons facing each other and chasing a pearl. The bottom border depicts the classical design of mountain, cloud bands and waves. The borders at the sides and the stepped top are adorned with lotus flowers.
The wool of the pile is of fine, soft quality woven into a cotton foundation.
The throne back is in very good condition.
