A pale blue ocean background on this antique Bessarabian Kilim woven in Romania, circa 1890-1900 in wonderful condition. When these Kilims from Bessarabia use the pale blue as the background colour it resembles water and the floral motifs floating upon it.  Wonderful elegant designs and colours.  With no structural damage or holes to speak of and the beautiful faded colours are typical of Kilims from this region and period of weaving. Kilims were produced in European countries we know as Romania and Bulgaria today from the 18th century.  Late 19th century pieces such as this floral design had softer colours than the Kilims woven in the early part of the twentieth century. The flowers in the border design and abstract floral designs in the main field are consistent with Kilims from Bessarabia.  Often similar in design to that of Caucasian designs such as Karabagh.

We love how the background of these Kilims have almost a wave like effect, look closely at the image to see this clever weaving technique in the pale blues and the subtle varieties of blue dye.  There is also some additional great dyes such as the pink and red tones with yellows and earth greens.  An exceptional example and with our underlay this would sit happily on a wood floor, tiles or fitted carpet.
