19th Century Spelter Shepherdess Table Lamps.

Dates: circa 1850.

Dimensions:

53.00cm high (20.87 inches high)
15.00cm diameter (5.91 inches diameter)

Description / Expertise:

A fine pair of 19th century, spelter, dark bronzed, shepherdesses in the pastoral and romantic styles upcycled into 21” high table lamps.

These fine sculptures introduce a classically inspired pastoral atmosphere and charm into the interior.
The shepherdesses are clothed in peasant attire according to conventions from the classical tradition; one is carrying a bowl of seed with a bird on her shoulder and the other carrying a large hat.
Original dark bronze patina.
Notably fine example of the 19th century revival of pastoral sculpture depicting rural life in an idealised and romantic style which first appeared in Hellenistic and Roman wall paintings and was revived in the Renaissance, the late-18th century and again in the mid-19th century.
The conversion has been replaced, conforming to UK Electrical standards.

Measures: Figure height 46 cm., 18 inches.
