18th century red japanned side chair.
A fine beechwood japanned single side chair, decorated in chinoiserie design or red and gold lacquer decoration. The seat and back has caned panels. 'NS' the chairmaker is stamped on the back seat rail. The back legs and all the stretchers are turned, with rectangular joint-sections, the front stretcher being set back from the front legs. The front cabriole legs have club type feet. The caned seat is rectangular in shape. The back has a curved shaped rake, two panels of cane work, between the central red and gilt splat in chinoiserie design which has a carved and pieced cresting in giltwood top of leaves.
