18th century mahogany wall lantern.

A very rare Georgian mahogany hanging corner lanthorn. Wooden wall lanterns (lanthorns is the correct term for this article) with mirrored backs were designed to increase the light by reflection. They are quite frequently mentioned in halls and staircases of well-to-do houses in the eighteenth century, but very few original ones have survived due to being enclosed with glass which, although shielded the candle from draughts, increased their fragility. The bow glass and mirror plates of this fine example would appear to be original.

English circa 1760.
