A George II period, antique eight day longcase clock of smaller size with unusual burr-yew case.
The moulded case is veneered with warm colored burr-yew and has a rectangular trunk door. The crossbanded base panel is supported by a double-stepped plinth. The hood, with tapered corner columns retains the original stepped caddy top.
The inside count wheel, hour-striking movement has five knopped and ringed pillars and anchor escapement. The 12 in brass dial is signed on the silvered and engraved chapter-ring and has a matted center with subsidiary date indication and seconds’ ring.
John Stephens was based in St Bride’s Parish, City of London in the early 1730s. His will (dated October, 1736) can be seen in the National Archives, Kew.
