AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING MID 15TH CENTURY EGG TEMPERA ON GOLD GROUND PAINTING. CATALONIA. CIRCA 1450.

THIS MEDIEVAL PAINTING OF THE SEATED PAPAL SAINT AMBROSE AND ST SEBASTIAN WITHIN A STUNNING GOTHIC TRACERY AND GILDED FRAME IS PROBABLY FROM AN ALTARPIECE. THERE IS A SPANISH TRADITION OF DEPICTING ST SEBASTIAN FULLY CLOTHED RATHER THAN NEARLY NAKED AS USUALLY SEEN. HE HOLDS IN HIS HAND HIS ATTRIBUTES OF THE BOW AND ARROWS, ST AMBROSE IS CREDITED WITH PROMULGATING THE NEWS OF ST SEBASTIANS MARTYDON IN THE 4TH CENTURY.

The art technique was known from the classical world, where it appears to have taken over from encaustic painting[citation needed] and was the main medium used for panel painting and illuminated manuscripts in the Byzantine world and Medieval and Early renaissance Europe. Tempera painting was the primary panel painting medium for nearly every painter in the European Medieval and Early renaissance period up to 1500. For example, every surviving panel painting by Michelangelo is egg tempera.
