A truly rare 15th century Norman walnut revolving bookstand. Circa 1480.
This rare bookstand has four facets to the top, each facet designed to hold a book. One of which has a pierced gothic arch storage space, possibly for quills or bookmarks. It is raised on a central chamfered column with four cross stretchers and stands on four splayed and shaped legs. The tapered top with galleried surround allows for a book to be displayed and read.
Stunning colour and patination, period restorations. Very solid and sturdy.
A rare survivor.
Note: In the Middle Ages, books were major status symbols for the very wealthy, indicating the educational and cultured sophistication of their owners. Therefore, this example would have come from a very wealthy household or church. See images.
