A fine famille rose garden seat.

Jiaqing period (1796-1820).

The bulbous body is decorated at the foot with moulded dragons painted in pink enamels with white eyes and teeth, above a narrow band of turquoise and pink enamels.

The lower register with four fan-like pierced openings, interspersed with jardinieres of plants and flowers and maidens in various pursuits, some are holding Daoist emblems.

The upper register with four pierced gilt roundels with ladies playing go under trees and children. All below a band of interlocking flower heads.

The top with a gilt pierced roundel with two elegant ladies either side of the central pierced roundel. In the foreground is a deer depicted with a pair of peaches on his back, and a phoenix.

Height: 47.5 cm. (18 3/4 in.).

Condition: There is some repaired damage to top.

Provenance: Captain Richard Alsager (1781-1841), of the East India Company.

The seat was acquired prior to 1830 and thence by descent. Captain Alsager returned from China to the UK in 1830.

Famille rose garden seats of this date are rare, especially with a provenance of this kind. Included with this seat is a mother of pearl counter decorated with the familly armorial of Captain Alsager.
