BADA Members Forum December 2020

Below are the answers to pre-submitted questions that were discussed at the Members' Forum. The below is not a transcript of the meeting, but contains all the key points that were made during the course of the discussion.

What is the total BADA marketing budget? And how is it allocated?

For 2020-21 a total of £42,500 was initially put into the budget to cover Advertising, Marketing & Promotion and the Website. Now this total has been projected as totalling £46,050, comprising:

BADA Member logo to download & save

Following a consultation with membership, members were notified in 2020 about a revised BADA logo incorporating the bust of Benvenuto Cellini. This has now been reworked to form part of a new suite of related BADA emblems. The resultant BADA Member logos are available for use by members on their stationery, adverts and websites.

Members are encouraged to use the emblem wherever possible, to help reinforce our brand with the public.

Museum Association Membership offer for BADA Members

Usually only available to those working in the Museums sector, following discussions with the Museums Association we are delighted to announce that BADA Members are now also eligible to join as individual members of the MA.

This carries two key benefits:

Grinling Gibbons Society

Sculptor, artist and, arguably, the greatest carver in British history, Grinling Gibbons has left an indelible mark that defines the cultural identity of the nation. Rising to become the country’s most celebrated master-carver, Gibbons had the ability to transform unyielding and solid media into ‘loose and airy lightness’. His masterpieces adorn palaces, country houses, churches and museums around Britain; his example has inspired craftsmanship and carving from his contemporaries to the modern-day.

BADA Friends News

7th December 2020 update

“Professional and beautifully organised”, “unbelievably wonderful”, “another insightful lecture on a fascinating topic”, “these Zoom talks are just perfect”, “What an excellent speaker… I could have listened for another hour”.

These are just a few of the positive comments that the BADA Friends has received regarding the Zoom lecture series that has been run this autumn and I am delighted that they have been such a great success and many thanks must go to Nicholas Merchant for being such an informative and entertaining speaker.

BADA Fraudulent activity register

Because members are ever more frequently receiving suspicious inquiries or potentially fraudulent approaches by email, we will now be listing details of these on a dedicated page on our website. You do not need to log in to see the page, so it can be bookmarked and referenced by others you work with who may not receive this newsletter.

Rather than emailing you all every time there is a suspected case of fraud or a reported criminal incident, you will now find listed below the most recent cases. If you would like to report a new case, please email [email protected]

Business Briefing: CITES restrictions lifted for certain rosewoods

No CITES permits needed for some Dalbergia rosewoods weighing 10 kg or less

I am pleased to report that CITES rules have be partially relaxed for all the Dalbergia species except Dalbergia nigra, because the CITES annotation, #15, has been changed.  “Finished products to a maximum weight of wood of the listed species of up to 10 kg per shipment” do not now require a CITES re-export or import permit.

The official notice says the following about the 10kg shipment limit:

Nomination of members for BADA Council elections

We are approaching the time of year when the membership has the opportunity to elect members of the Council.

We’re keen to ensure that the Council reflects all aspects of BADA’s membership.  The key responsibilities of a Council member are to advise and help guide the association in its role as the body representing dealers who maintain the highest standards of dealing in antiques, art and design.
