Ivory: apply for an exemption certificate to deal in pre-1918 outstandingly high artistic, cultural or historical value items

Ivory Act:

  • 9 weeks left to register items comprising less than 10% ivory (from Monday 4 April)

  • Applications should be made now for exemption certificates for items of high artistic, cultural or historical value

  • BADA ivory webinar recording available here

Members are reminded that in order to continue offering for sale pre-1947 items comprising less than 10 per cent ivory by volume ("de minimis items"), you must have registered them with Defra before Monday 6 June 2022.

If the ivory items comprise 10 per cent or more ivory and you believe them to be of high artistic, cultural or historical value you may still be able to sell them provided you have applied for an exemption certificate.

If ivory items have not been registered or received an exemption certificate before 6 June 2022, dealers will be unable to offer them for sale from 6 June and may be subject to prosecution. Owners of ivory items who are not offering them for sale do not need to register them.

For more information about registration of de minimis ivory items or applying for an exemption certificate please see the following administrative guidance pages of the Government's web site:
