Herbert Royle was born in Patricroft, Preston, was trained at the local Art School, Harris Institute and Southport Academy. In 1918 he moved to Nessfield , Yorkshire where he lived in the Manor House for the rest of his life. His studio was in an army shed in the garden . The Manor house had no running water or electricity. His paintings of Dales became very popular and he sold his work at the RA, RSA, ROI, NEAC, GI and the Manchester Academy of Arts. Royle also travelled to the Western Highlands , Scotland for walking and climbing holidays, paying for his lodgings with gifts of his paintings.
His works hangs in many of the countries leading Art galleries.
