A First Period Worcester Porcelain Leaf Molded Sauce Boat.

Circa, 1755-56.

The early First Period Worcester porcelain sauce boat is modelled in the form of overlapping cos lettuce leaves. This form and decoration are based on Meissen porcelain form and decoration.

This unusual molded example has a looped stem handle and is decorated inside and out with scattered flower sprigs and insects, and finished with raised fruit near the handle juncture.

Mark: Puce workman's mark.

Dimensions: 7 1/4 inches in length x 3 1/4 inches x 4 inches

Condition: Good with a tiny frit to the exterior of the lip

Reference: S. Spero and J. Sandon, "Worcester Porcelain 1751-1790, The Zorensky Collection", 1996, p. 120, no. 88.

The authors note that this is one of the very few sauce boats derived from Meissen rather than silver. The boat corresponds to an entry in the factory’s London warehouse price card of 1755-56 of "Leaf sauceboats enamelled 1st 2nd".

They also note that they were priced considerably higher than Bow porcelain boats of the period.
