A plump puppy sits patiently resting one paw on the back of its sibling who bites at the cord which is fastened round its brother’s neck. The scene is one of gentle playfulness.

The ears of these little shiba inu flop forwards softly and their tails curl up into little coils. The eyes are carved with pierced pupils and the whiskers and brows are incised.

Signed on the underside: Jugyoku

These pudgy little creatures echo the somewhat amorphous groups of puppies painted by the renowned Kyoto artist Maruyama Ōkyo (1733-1795)
